The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector<\/strong> in the Southern Mediterranean plays a pivotal role in driving economic growth and innovation<\/strong>. Due to its high degree of interconnectedness, ICT provides strong backward and forward linkages<\/strong> to industries such as healthcare, education, manufacturing, and agriculture<\/strong>. The sector presents significant opportunities for better integration into Global Value Chains (GVCs)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The development of ICT clusters<\/strong>\u2014which bring together diverse organizations, including businesses, universities, and governments<\/strong>\u2014promotes productivity, innovation, knowledge sharing, and market awareness<\/strong>, driving overall economic development<\/strong>. These clusters foster innovation<\/strong> and unlock potential in fields such as e-health, fintech, agritech, and smart cities<\/strong>, all of which hold great promise for sustainable growth in the Mediterranean region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The ICT sector is thriving<\/strong> across the South Med region<\/strong>, supported by government initiatives and private sector innovation<\/strong>. Countries such as Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco<\/strong> are at the forefront of digital transformation and economic growth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The ECF Cluster “Mapster”<\/strong> has identified 82 South Mediterranean clusters<\/strong>, with 19% operating in the ICT sector<\/strong>, including health tech, ICT services, and software industries<\/strong>. These clusters are key players<\/strong> in the region\u2019s digital transformation, fostering cross-sectoral synergies, driving innovation, and supporting the growth of emerging industries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As South Med countries continue to expand their ICT ecosystems<\/strong>, collaboration between the public and private sectors<\/strong> remains crucial in overcoming challenges and maximizing the sector\u2019s potential<\/strong>. Strengthening regional cooperation through joint initiatives and technology transfer<\/strong> will be key to enhancing cluster competitiveness and their participation in regional value chains<\/strong>. Policy alignment and market access<\/strong> will further unlock their full potential, driving economic growth and sustainable development<\/strong> across the region.<\/p>\n
