This crisis presents a real test to the resilience of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries, as it came at a time when they were challenged to keep their economies growing, facing increasing unemployment and scarce resources. The way out of the crisis will greatly depend on how countries in the region prioritise their actions, and on how they integrate and cooperate with each other in key sectors. Following the success of the first\u00a0<\/em><strong>round of\u00a0<\/strong><em>\u201c<\/em><strong><em>COVID-19 MED BRIEFS<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u201d<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0launched by the\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI)<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0FEMISE,<\/strong><em>\u00a0the two institutions decided to join forces again and launch a second round.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.femise.org\/en\/slideshow-en\/round-2-call-for-policy-briefs-covid-19-med-briefs-29-janvier-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This series of Policy Briefs is intended to pave the way for more in-depth thematic analyses and recommendations.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The twenty-second COVID-19 MED BRIEF entitled &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">COVID-related financial challenges for South-Med universities: The way forward<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> by Wagdy Sawahel, National Research Center (Egypt),<a href=\"https:\/\/www.femise.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/CMI-FEMISE-COVID-BRIEFS-22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> is\u00a0available here<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Summary\u00a0:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-19984\" src=\"https:\/\/www.femise.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PB22-Coverpage-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.femise.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PB22-Coverpage-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/www.femise.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PB22-Coverpage-673x1024.jpg 673w, https:\/\/www.femise.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PB22-Coverpage-624x950.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.femise.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PB22-Coverpage.jpg 701w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/>This brief focuses on the impact the Coronavirus pandemic has had on the financial support to universities and higher education institutions in selected South-Med countries (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">It outlines the financial impact on the ground, proposes recommendations and practical solutions to face the shortage of funding and lays the foundations for a more sustainable higher education funding landscape. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Recommendations highlight the need to go towards a cost-effective business model. Universities should adopt cost-effective blended modes of teaching and learning, and include risk management in their strategic planning.
