Femise has released its latest report on the Euromediterranean Partnership and the situation of the Mediterranean countries. The subject of this year’s report is to provide information about how the crisis is affecting the Mediterranean Countries.

To address these issues, this report will assess in a first part, the crisis from a general perspective, following three chapters: (i) The first chapter aims to determine how the international crisis is going to affect the Mediterranean countries by focusing on the unprecedented aspects of the processes; (ii) The second chapter will detail the system of interdependence linking the Mediterranean countries with the rest of the world, especially Europe via trade of goods and services, direct investment and transfers; (iii) The third chapter is devoted to give an overview of the current social policies set up in the Mediterranean countries, which will play a decisive role in a context where the MPC population is already struggling with unemployment and under-employment.

In the second part, the report addresses the current situation of the south Mediterranean economies concerned, country by country.

Following its new dissemination strategy and in response to the increasing demand on its resources from network members and outside, FEMISE has made a complete recasting of its website. The new BETA version of the website is a complete rebuilding on the basis of the most recent technology platform. The new website creates an easier access to FEMISE rich database of research, publications and information.

The following are the most important highlights of the new website:

1. The use of the new website will be made in three layers.

The first layer accessible by all users gives access to all published information on the website.

The second layer accessible by Members of the FEMISE network, where they will be able, using a special login name and password, to:

i. post their institutes’ news (including conferences, call for papers, new publications, …etc)

ii. to exchange their views through a Euromed ‘Blog’ (a kind of a discussion board) on a certain topic or article of concern

The third will be made for members of the Steering Committee and RSG where they can access some administrative information.

Note that the login will be sent to all members during March 2009.

2. An internal search engine that indexes all pages html and an advanced search engine that will allow more detailed search by categories, date, keyword, ..etc. (under construction)

3. Subscribing to the newsletter by entering their email.

4. Other advanced options will be made available on a later phase, including RSS flows, the possibly of rating or commenting on a certain news or information.

The current Beta version of the website marks a substantial change from the old version, being a Beta version, some of the features are still not fully accessible or are on trial. We are counting on your help to bring this website to your expected standards and make it as user friendly as possible, therefore, we would most welcome your comments and suggestions on the current version, and we will try our best to take them into consideration.

Please send your comments to: contact@femise.org

Femise Research Reports

These reports disseminate the results of the research projects undertaken by FEMISE members and funded by the European Commission grant.

Since its inception in 1997 to date, FEMISE has published 86 Research Reports that have been distributed in the EU-Med Region and outside. 33 reports have been produced in FEMISE I (1998-1999), 37 reports produced within FEMISE II (2000-2005) and so far 16 reports produced within the association since its establishment in 2005. FEMISE research activities ensures a detailed and independent record of the economic partnership between EU and Mediterranean countries and strengthen the co-operation between researchers in the region. From 1998 to 2009, nearly 5 million euro were employed in economic research on the region.

Femise Country Profiles

Between 2004 and 2006, FEMISE has produced 10 Country Profiles for the 10 South Mediterranean partners with contributions from national experts following a general structure. These reports have been successful in brining together national experts to address five different aspects of their own economies: Fiscal and Macroeconomic, Trade, Financial, Governance, Labour and social issues in the context of the EU-Med partnership. Each aspect has been addressed in a chapter,in a addition to a sixth chapter on the Multi-criteria analysis. These ten reports are available in either English (Egypt, Jordan,, Palestine, Syria, Turkey and Israel) or French (Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon and Tunisia) and some are also available in Arabic.

Selected Country Profiles have benefited from co-funding from the Arab Fund for Social Development (AFSD).
